Travel chic and comfy

A bus trip is way different from flying to your destination. But in both cases it is easy to tell who is the frequent traveller and who is not.

When travelling, comfort should be number one priority. When you are comfortable in your clothes and shoes, not only will you have a smooth trip, the people seated next to you will have no reason to complain.

Some fashionable people you may follow such as Kim Kardashian can dress in certain ways because they expect to find paparazzi at the airport and don’t want to appear in the tabloids looking anything but hot.

But have you ever wondered what is in her carry-on luggage?

You do not expect her to wear those heels throughout the flight, plus the inconvenience they can cause if she has to make her way to the lavatory.

Since there may be unexpected changes in the temperatures, it is better to wear layers so that you can shed off the scarf or cardigan when it gets warmer or put them on when temperatures drop.

The shorts, sandals and chiffon top may look cute before takeoff but after 10 hours of a cold flight, you will feel and look horrible to your receiving party.

Do not count on the inflight blankets. You will be disappointed.

So wear something that covers your legs, comfortable shoes and keep a simple sweater or scarf within reach.

If you still want to look super elegant for whoever is receiving you upon arrival, there is an option of visiting the ‘ladies’ and getting your swagg on before exiting.

Whatever you do, do not compromise your comfort.

Show some skin with the high slit

Some trends never get out of fashion. Like the slit. The lengths may vary but the leg showing trend and the cut that goes with it are here to stay.

You do not need a super-slim physique, miles-long legs, or a perfectly defined waist to pullfashion off this look.

Whether it is worn in the form of a maxi dress, floor-length skirt, or full-out glamorous gown, a thigh-high slit is one of the simplest ways to add a little oomph and sex appeal to your night-out outfit. It can be tasteful and subtle when done the right way. You just need a few tricks.

For every design, fabric is everything so, choose the right fabric. What’s the point of wearing a slit if it is in heavy wool and allows for little movement and few chances for a peek at your leg?

That is why it is smart to choose a flowing, lightweight fabric like satin or chiffon. The human eye will follow the slit down to the feet so it is important to complete the look with a nice pair of heels or low profile sandals.

The slit is seductive and one way to drive the point home is by defining your waist. Your options are a thin belt or a thick band of contrasting colour fabric.

For any trend, you have the option of staying within your comfort zone.

If the full-on frontal slit is too much for you, opt for a more subtly placed side slit, which offers all the drama of a front slit, but in a more toned-down way.

ABRYANZ STYLE & FASHION AWARDS (ASFA 2014) ON TONIGHT

Last year, it was called the Fashion Xplosion Men Awards. It returns this year but refreshed and renamed. The Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards take place this evening at the MTN Arena Lugogo. The brain behind it, Ahumuza Brian promises the biggest fashion and style event on the social scene. Ahumuza is a fashion collector, proprietor of Abryanz Collection and has made a name for styling Ugandan male celebrities and now has his biggest store at Garden City. Speaking to Fashion Police256 about the awards he said, “Our primary goal is to see the industry grow and we are making headway. The awards bring together fashion designers, collectors, models, photographers and writers in different categories and there is no prize money attached to them.

This year’s theme is Dress For Success. The idea is to make the people appreciate the industry and understand that fashion is more than just swagg but they need to dress the way they want to be addressed. “The way you dress can determine your success,” he says.

The number of categories has since grown. So has the voting system. The categories have increased from 12 to 22. There are two voting systems where the SMS platform run by SMS One is contributing 60% while online is 40%. The online voting system is one person, one vote that makes it even more transparent.

The accolades for best dressed TV Personality (male and female), Upcoming Model (male and female) and Fashion designer (male and female) are some of the most competitive.

There will also be an award for the best-dressed female and male guest. So put your best for forward. Fenon Records will be in charge of the production.

Bark cloth for international runways

Last Thursday, the Uganda National Museum hosted a one of a kind fashion show. The pieces were partly or fully made out bark cloth (lubugo) by José Mendo. At the event, fashion designers based here and abroad hatched a plan to make bark cloth one of the mainstream fabrics on and off the runway. The Bark 2 The Roots programme is a brain child of Josephine Kyomuhendo, a UK- based fashion designer who label José Hendo has been featured on fashion shows in Europe, the New York Fashion Week and recently Kampala Fashion Week. The project is a collaboration with Makerere University School of Fine Artist, fashion designers like Stella Atal,Eva Mynsberghe and Anne Musisi among others. The idea is to bring together researchers, makers, designers, education institutions and buyers (promoting production and export) among other stakeholders to promote the environmental friendly, sustainable and renewable material that bark cloth is. DSC_5388Some designers showcased how the material from the mutuba tree can be used as fabric for clothing and decorated with patterns or mixed with other textiles, while Mynsberghe showcased how she is using the material to make jewelry. José Hendo showed the potential of bark cloth and how it can be maneuvered during designing. Her haute couture avant-garde designs showcased on that day showed how the material can become a global trend. She explained that she is using explosion of colours plus silhouettes and patterns that that can be embraced by the young generation. That way, bark can move forward but keep its heritage.

DSC_5368The event partly put together by activist Winnie Sseruma also broughtDSC_5355 together fashion lovers of different generations and eco-sustainable designers. Bark cloth was the only form of fabric way back before textiles like cotton, nylon, and polyester among others pushed it out and left it for the coffin. This project could end the stigma attached to it and put it at the same level with the likes of leather, silk and other fabrics.

Kampala Fashion Week lands with a bang

DSC_4492

The first edition of the Kampala Fashion Week took place last week with the grand finale on Saturday night at Kololo ceremonial grounds. To say that designers pulled all stops at the event, a brainchild of Gloria Wavamunno, would be an understatement.

DSC_4214The nine fashion designers plus the jewellery and shoes thatDSC_3935 went with their creations, made every effort to create a lasting first impression.

The event organization was impeccable thanks to LDJ Productions from New York, and this could go down in history as one of the fashion shows attended by true fashion lovers and not just wannabes.

The runway lights came on around 8:30pm and there could not have been a better way to open the show than having the winner of Africa’s Next Top Model, Aamito Stacie, showcasing a high slit and plunging V neckline dress by Kwesh (Juliana Nasasira). From then till 10pm, model after model hit the runway walking unique designs as the guests applauded.

The runway was graced by jumpsuits, florals, mind-blowing men’s wear, one-shoulder dresses, among others, made from leather, bark cloth, beads, lace and African fabric.

Ras Kasozi of Kas Wear worked with military inspired fabrics and black lace for his collection. Fringed and pointed-shoulder finishing stood out in his collection.

Sylvia Owori showcased her Safari Collection before first daughter Natasha Kainembabazi Karugire showcased her comeback collection under J&Kainembabazi.

collection, with some beading to finish some dresses in the neck area. A matching yellow hat complemented one of her yellow dresses with simple animal prints.

After a 15-minute break, Gloria Wavamunno’s collection that bordered more on the abstract graced the catwalk.

What stood out was the draping accompanying some of the designs and the use of nude colour pastels. The beautiful handmade jewellery, sandals and bags by Zanaa complemented the designs.

UK-based Jose Hendo brought the end to a fantastic night with close to 30 unique creations.

Her touch on the ready-to-wear designs made out of fabric left a lasting impression. Martha Jabo, Catherine & Sons and Eguana also showcased.

Fashion lovers are definitely looking forward to next year’s edition.

Wear that suit right

No matter how cool and expensive that suit looks, if you ignore this simple rule. You risk looking trashy instead of classy. Something as simple as how you button up should not be ignored. Let us assume that you have buttoned up the pants (wink) so let us concentrate on the jacket.

What are the rules on buttoning a suit? Why are there even rules on buttoning suits?
Well – the rules are easy enough to learn. I’ve laid them out in the suit buttoning infographic above.
But why do we do this? Why even care about suit buttoning rules?

Two Reasons

1) It sends a signal that you pay attention to the details.

The vast majority of men who violate these rules do so because they do not wear a suit regularly.  These small rules are used by “those in the know” to identify other men “in the the know.”  It’s like a secret knock!

Childish? Illogical? Perhaps, but it’s the reality.

2) In most situations, this makes a suit look better on a man.

A buttoned suit when standing cuts a cleaner silhouette – when seated unbuttoning allows you to sit more comfortable and prevent wrinkles and button stress/popping. In addition – many 3 button suits re not made to be buttoned on the top (called 2 1/2 suits) and the lower button is almost always in a position where it restricts movement (and provides no added silhouette forming features vs. a single button buttoned!).

Important to note that we’re talking about SUITS here. Sports jackets are usually buttoned the same way but the rules are much more relaxed because it’s a more casual style.

Single-Breasted Jackets

Most modern suits have a single-breasted jacket. How to button it depends on two factors: the number of buttons the jacket has and where the buttons are in relation to your waist. A jacket with a high stance has buttons at and above the natural waist, while a jacket with a low stance (more common these days) has its buttons at and below the waist.

SAM_6647

One-button jackets

Single-breasted one-button jackets are becoming more common (and the classic choice for Black Tie) , and should always be buttoned when standing. You may unbutton when seated.

SAM_6696

Two-button jackets

Conventional way to button a two-button jacket is to button the top button and leave the lower undone.  A few possible exceptions:

Men who like a very long lapel sometimes button the lower button and fold the lapel all the way down past the top buttonhole. An unusually high-stance jacket might look more proportional buttoned at the lower button. Very tall men may need to use the lower button rather than the upper to keep the jacket from spreading out above their waist and exposing the trouser-front and belt buckle (looks unsightly with a buttoned jacket).

image745

Double-Breasted Jackets

Double-breasted jackets are almost always worn buttoned.  It’s very unusual to unbutton one.

Double-breasted jackets are described with the total number of buttons on the suit front followed by the number of working buttons — so a “six-on-four” jacket has six buttons but only four buttonholes.

Generally speaking you want to button all the buttons that have working buttonholes.

If you plan to leave some buttons undone, it is most traditional to fasten the top button.  However, men who prefer a longer line have been leaving the lowest button undone instead for quite a few years now, including members of the British royal family, so you’re probably safe either way.

SAM_6730

Three-button jackets

Conventional method is to always button the middle button and to button the top button if desired, while always leaving the bottom button undone.

Fastening all three buttons at once looks stiff and should be avoided!
